How can SEL supports be integrated through the application of mobile learning technologies to support elementary students with Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Abstract

Society is embracing changes in education like never before. As many of us move to online learning, either fully or in part, the market is flooded with technology and applications that allow for remote student access in all areas of the curriculum. Many families are equipped with mobile technology devices, which enables students to learn not only away from the classroom, but also away from the home. In providing a mobile curriculum, educators are aware that the content needs to be both rich and engaging. Mobile learning offers educators with a means to provide a personalized and learner-centered experience. One area of the curriculum that has been brought to the forefront in recent years is Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and the recognition that acquisition of these skills can enhance not only academic achievement, but also skills for life that will extend far beyond the school years. These skills are even more important for students with Special Educational needs and particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as many of these students suffer social emotional impairment together with poor self-regulation. The paper addresses the question “How can SEL supports be integrated through the application of Mobile Learning Technologies to support elementary students with Autism Spectrum Disorder?” A website, SEL for ASD, was developed as a result. (http://selforasd.weebly.com/) This website provides a collection of resources that would be useful to both educators and parents as they plan an SEL curriculum for students with ASD. It contains both full curricula, which could provide an entire program, as well as individual apps which can be used as stand-alone experiences. The website was sent to a selection of educators, professionals and parents for review, and improvements were made based upon their response.
