Abstract

This project explores project-based learning as a teaching method that can effectively meet the needs of today’s students as they navigate the new curriculum. The project will draw connections between the skills that are developed in students who use project-based learning and the core competencies of the new curriculum in British Columbia. Project-based learning will encourage the development of 21st learning skills such as: communication, creative thinking, critical thinking and collaboration which are foundational skills of the core competencies. Students are challenged to answer real-world problems which increases learner engagement. A handbook was created as a resource to help encourage teachers to use project-based learning in the classroom that will complement the new curriculum in British Columbia.
