Abstract
In an era where educational equity is increasingly recognized as crucial, this applied project documents the journey of designing and implementing a Professional Development Program (PDPV) that teaches inclusive education practices to teachers in Vietnam, aimed at enabling Vietnamese teachers to incorporate inclusive practices within their classrooms. Grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction (DI), using the adult education theory and the social model of disability as its frameworks, the program sought to address the diverse learning needs present in contemporary classrooms, preparing educators to adapt their teaching strategies to support all students. This initiative was propelled by the recognition of significant gaps in existing educational practices concerning inclusivity in Vietnam’s classrooms and the need for a systemic transformation to cater to the varied needs of learners. The program unfolded through a series of workshops that provided educators with the theoretical underpinnings of UDL and DI, coupled with practical strategies for implementation. Through interactive sessions, educators were encouraged to rethink curriculum design, instructional methods, and assessment practices from an inclusivity lens. The applied project meticulously chronicles the challenges encountered in this transformative journey, from economic hurdles and resource constraints to deeper issues of cultural perceptions and systemic rigidity in educational practices. The program highlights the pivotal role of continuous professional development and the cultivation of a supportive educator community in sustaining these inclusive practices. This PDPV's design, implementation, and outcomes will contribute valuable insights into the potential of targeted professional development programs to catalyze inclusive educational practices. It underscores the importance of equipping Vietnamese educators with the knowledge and skills to adapt to the evolving needs of their students, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape in Vietnam and beyond.
