A dive into the Pacific (IPCA Innovation Centre)
Subject
Abstract
Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) have been presented as a way for Crown governments (federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada) to work collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples to advance Canada’s international commitments to conservation. However, the complex process of establishing IPCAs without clear enabling legislation and limited supports presents challenges. To address this, a collaborative initiative called the Pacific IPCA Innovation Centre was established. As the first of its kind in Canada, it aims to facilitate the sharing of best practices and build capacity to assist with IPCA establishment. This research serves as a central examination of the Pacific IPCA Innovation Centre, highlighting the need for a champion role, a dedicated project team, and a clear framework with well-defined goals to guide future efforts.
