Abstract
Audio recording and transcript of John Carruthers's 1979 interview with Myrtle Bergren for the Coal Tyee History Project. Carruthers shares details about his and his father's involvement in the mining industry. He talks about his various jobs in mines around Nanaimo, as well as in Britannia, Extension, and Cumberland. He shares his opinion about the industry and he reflects on the importance of union organizing. He talks about the influence of mine manager Jack Hunt and about working conditions in the mines. Carruthers also shares his experience of the December 1940 explosion in the #10 Mine in South Wellington.
