Creating safe classrooms for students affected by trauma
Subject
Abstract
This design project researched the negative effects of trauma on the brain and how this impacts student learning and behaviour at school. It examined how teachers feel inadequate in their role of dealing with students affected by trauma. The goal was to create a trauma manual that would help classroom teachers know how to make their classrooms a safe environment for students affected by trauma. The trauma manual presented in Chapter 4 includes four parts:
1. Lessons on the brain and the impact trauma has on student behaviour
2. Research on strategies to set up a safe classroom
3. Hands on teacher tools and strategies
4. Additional supports and suggestions for further information.
