Abstract
Audio recording and transcript of Alex Menzie's 1979 interview with Bernard McNicholl for the Coal Tyee History Project. Menzies discusses his various roles in mines, including how he started working in a coal mine in Scotland when he was 12 years old. He talks about his family's arrival in Canada and how his father and brothers also worked as coal miners. He shares some of his experiences working with mules and horses in Nanaimo area mines, including how he was fired from his job for killing a horse. Menzies talks about what it was like to work in the No. 1 Esplanade Mine and he also reflects on the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike.
