Abstract

Audio recording and transcript of Janette Glover-Geidt's May 1997 presentation to the Nanaimo Historical Society about Union Bay. The talk is based on Glover-Geidt's book, "The Friendly Port: A History of Union Bay, 1880-1960" which was commended by the British Columbia Historical Federation as the "Best Community History" of 1990. Glover-Geidt shares and describes photos of sites, structures, and equipment related to Union Bay's coal mining history, and provides background information about significant buildings in the town. She also reads an excerpt from her book which details the arrest of Henry Wagner, known as "The Flying Dutchman" for his life of crime along the B.C. coast, who was apprehended while attempting to rob the Fraser and Bishop Store in Union Bay in March of 1913.
