Abstract
Audio recording and transcript of T.W. Paterson's presentation in 2001 to the Nanaimo Historical Society in which he talks about the current state of coal mines in the Nanaimo area. Having explored former mining sites all over Vancouver Island, from Victoria to Fort Rupert, Paterson explains what one might find still remaining. He gives an account of some of his experiences "scratching" at mine sites in Cumberland and in the Nanaimo area, including Granby, South Wellington, Extension, and Harewood. Paterson outlines the development of his personal interest in industrial heritage, and reflects on why he is motivated to write about it.
