Abstract
Audio recording and transcript of Dr. Larry Giovando's 1979 interview with Myrtle Bergren for the Coal Tyee History Project. Giovando shares his memories of growing up as a person of Italian descent in Ladysmith, where his family was in the hotel business. He discusses his job as a doctor in Ladysmith, Granby, Cumberland, and Nanaimo and he also mentions his political career. He shares his thoughts of the impact of the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike, and he retells a story about his grandmother and Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Currie, who was in Ladysmith with the militia called out during the strike. During the interview Giovando shares some of his impressions of the Chinatowns in Ladysmith and Nanaimo and he also gives some information about sex workers in Nanaimo.
