Abstract
Audio recording and transcript of John Slogar's 1979 interview with Bernard McNicholl for the Coal Tyee History Project. Slogar shares his memories of the coal mining era on Vancouver Island, where he, his father, and his brothers worked in the industry. He recalls the 1909 Extension Mine explosion, which his father just narrowly missed being in. He talks about how his family coped during his father's imprisonment during the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike. Slogar gives details about living and working in Lantzville, and he also reflects on Prohibition, leisure activities, and Nanaimo's red-light district. During the interview Slogar touches on union activities and he also talks about his war service.
