Abstract

Audio recording and transcript of Glyn Lewis's 1979 interview with Myrtle Bergren for the Coal Tyee History Project. Lewis reflects on his long career as a coal miner in the Nanaimo area. He opens the interview by talking about his family history, explaining how his family arrived on Vancouver Island just prior to the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike. He talks about some of the different small and independent coal mining operations in the area, and also about his schooling to get his fire boss certification. Throughout the interview Lewis talks about various family members and work acquaintances, and he also tells a hunting anecdote about James Dunsmuir. Lewis concludes the interview by reflecting on different leisure activities, including Christmastime, fishing, and hunting.
