Abstract

Audio recording and transcript of Arthur Simpson's 1979 interview with Bernard McNicholl for the Coal Tyee History Project. Simpson, whose father was also a coal miner, shares memories of his experience working in the coal mines around Nanaimo. He recounts how he got his first job in the mine and also reflects on how he felt going into the mine for the first time. He talks about living in Harewood and shares his memories of the Vancouver Island Coal Miners' Strike. During the interview Simpson also talks about transportation, social activities, and Nanaimo's red-light district.
