Embracing Emma: lessons in diversity and acceptance

Abstract
This study used the research method of an autoethnography to reflect on the fears, acceptance and hope, and celebration of raising a child with Down syndrome. In this autoethnography I have shared several stories about my
journey with a child with Down syndrome. The stories highlight my experiences and share my reflections about how I have come to appreciate and value those with exceptionalities. This research found that fear can be a paralyzing
experience and negatively impact an event that should have been filled with joy. Acceptance and hope emerged once the fear was understood and new knowledge gained. Learning to appreciate everything about life and celebrating with those around you is the most rewarding experience possible. With this thesis I hope to encourage others to view people with exceptionalities in a new way: with acceptance, value and respect.
