Abstract

The goal of this research study was to gain a stronger sense of the following question: what do teachers know and need to know, about supporting adolescent students’ mental health? Results were collected through an online survey which was given to teaching staff at a small secondary school on Vancouver Island. The results of the survey indicated that the majority of participants were aware that adolescent mental health concerns are on the rise, and teachers routinely see students who are struggling under distress and want to learn more. The results reported gaps in teachers’ understanding about mental health in general, and that they felt some tentativeness in being able to effectively respond to student concerns. The major barriers that were identified included adequate funding, resources, access, and time to address needs. Participants highlighted the need for more professional development opportunities to increase practical knowledge about adolescent mental health, as well as access to additional resources, both within and outside of the school environment. Recommendations for further research and practice are discussed.
