Small wetlands are increasingly beleaguered environments and are particularly threatened in urbanizing areas. Too small (usually less than 2 hectares) and sometimes too ephemeral to be served by existing evaluation and protection mechanisms, they frequently fall victim to environmentally careless and insensitive development practices.
