Project-Related Decision Making in Healthcare: An Appreciative Inquiry Research Project

Abstract

Organizational project decision making has many far-reaching and lasting impacts. Understanding how decision-making environments can improve decision outcomes is beneficial, which led to the inquiry question: How might PHC decision makers improve upon current environments to assist decision makers to better prioritize making project-related decisions? This organizational study was conducted within a new-build hospital project, 1 year before opening. Research participants included current organizational employees involved in decision making for the new hospital project. In accordance with the ethics requirements of Royal Roads University and the University of British Columbia Research Information Systems, data were collected through a three-step process that included a survey, interviews, and a research working group. Key findings were organized into four themes focused on team dynamics, leadership qualities, communication, and documentation. Key recommendations consisted of 14 actions that the Providence Health Care executive leadership team could implement to create an ideal decision-making environment.
