Item Bird banding project at the Calvert Island Field Station: 2016 data report(Electronic version published by Vancouver Island University, 2017-02) Chalmers, Sarah; Whetten, Kimberley; Demers, EricIn 2015, Vancouver Island University conducted a banding project on Calvert Island that was continued in 2016 with objectives to: monitor migrant and resident birds on Calvert Island; and, assess the suitability of the site as a long-term monitoring station. This project was conducted in partnership with the Hakai Institute, a research and postgraduate teaching institution that advances field-based research in coastal British Columbia, and Vancouver Island University. This report summarizes the activities and results for the bird banding project conducted on Calvert Island in 2016. Data included from these activities will be considered in forming the assessment of the suitability of the site as a long-term monitoring station. Summaries of public demonstrations / education, as well as social media outreach are also included.Item Bird monitoring and banding project at Buttertubs West Marsh, Nanaimo, BC: 2013 data report(Electronic version published by Vancouver Island University, 2013-11-03) Demers, EricDuring March-October 2013, Vancouver Island University established and operated a bird monitoring and banding project at Buttertubs West Marsh, with overall objectives to: monitor migrant and resident birds to contribute to regional and continent-wide efforts to monitor changes in population levels of these species; provide practical educational and training opportunities for VIU students and community volunteers; and, conduct public demonstrations where people of all ages can learn about bird identification, ecology, evolution and conservation. This project was conducted in close collaboration with the Vancouver Avian Research Centre, which operates a bird monitoring and banding station at Colony Farm Regional Park, in Coquitlam, BC, and in partnership with the City of Nanaimo and Ducks Unlimited Canada. This report summarizes the activities and results of the first year of this project. Project activities are described in the sections below and included: songbird monitoring and banding; swallow nest box monitoring; and, nocturnal owl monitoring and banding.
