The collection includes digital files of sound recordings and transcripts recorded for the Coal Tyee History Project of the Coal Tyee Society. Also included are photos which supplement the recordings.
VIUSpace contains material reflecting the socio-cultural norms and prejudices of its time. Academic libraries are challenged to preserve contemporaneous expressions of ideas, not to endorse or perpetuate them, but so they may be studied and challenged in service of a more just, equitable and humane society.     Model of the White Rapids Mine buildings built by Jack Work

    Photo of a scale model based on the White Rapids Mine buildings built by Jack Work. The model was featured in a three part article in the magazine "Model Railroader" in October, November, and December 1959, and became the basis for popular model coal mine kits sold by Model Power and Pola. The original model built by Work is now part of the Nanaimo Museum collection.

    Photo of a blocked mine access located in the City of Nanaimo parking lot at 95 Cavan Street, which is at the corner of Cavan Street and Victoria Road. The access is supposedly to the Douglas Mine, which operated in the Nanaimo downtown area from 1860 to 1883.

    100 years of coal monument in Nanaimo, B.C.

    Photo of 100 years of coal (1849-1949) monument in downtown Nanaimo, B.C. The plaque below the monument reads: "In honour of Nanaimo coal mine workers May 2, 1987 U.M.W. of A." The monument is located at the corner of Church and Front Streets, across the street from Dallas Square. The piece of coal which makes up the monument was mined from the Esplanade No.1 Mine, which was located nearby. The monument was put up by the United Mine Workers of America in 1987 as a gift to the city.
